Richard E. Grooms, Sr.
Richard E. Grooms, Sr., 72, of Middlebury, died at 5:05 am on Thursday, May
11, at Elkhart Hospice House, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born on
May 15, 1944 in Greenfield, OH, to Everett and Pauline (Snyder) Grooms. On
February 28, 1996 in Middlebury he married Maxine Sommers, she survives.
Survivors in addition to his wife are daughter, Tessa (Dale Holloway) Shidler
of Niles, MI; two sons, Richard Grooms, Jr. of Carterville, GA, Martin (Wendy)
Grooms of Columbia City; step son, Jason (Stacey) Grooms of Granger; step
daughter Aimee (Mike) Olson of Tucson, AZ; nine grandchildren; two great
grandchildren; two sisters, Sharon (Mike) Hagan of Englewood, FL, Sue
(Mike) Everhart of Columbus, OH; two brothers, Sam (Shirley) Grooms of
Dallas, TX, Robert (Michelle) Grooms of Chillicothe, OH. He was preceded in
death by his son, Brian Heath Grooms; daughter, Nichole Lee Grooms;
parents; brother, Roger Grooms. Richard was a sports fanatic, especially
following the Colts and was a huge Ohio State fan. He enjoyed Golfing,
working at home in his landscaping, gardening and yard. He served from
1962-1967 in the US Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. He loved spending
time with his family. Visitation will be from 3:00 - 7:00 pm on Monday, May 15,
at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 South Main Street Middlebury. Funeral
services will follow the visitation at 7:00 pm on Monday. Services will be
conducted by Pastor Ron Russell and the American Legion Post #210 will
conduct Military Honors. Burial will be at a later date in Grace Lawn Cemetery,
Middlebury. Memorials may be given to Wounded Warrior Project.
