Merlin Ray "Mert" Mockler
                      February 8, 1934 -- March 17, 2015

Merlin Ray “Mert” Mockler, 81, of Middlebury, died at 2:50 am on
Tuesday, March 17, at Elkhart Hospice House. He had been in
declining health. He was born on February 8, 1934 in LaGrange
County, to Lloyd and Beulah (Christner) Mockler.  On April 22, 1956
at the Middlebury Church of the Brethren, he married Darlene
Schrock; she survives. Survivors in addition to his wife are two
sons, Randy (Cindy) Mockler and Scott Mockler both of
Middlebury; daughter, Debbie (Kevin) Kemper of Syracuse; five
grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; sister, Joyce (Doug)
Nelson of Shipshewana; brother, Don (Sharon) Mockler of Goshen.  
He was preceded in death by his parents, a great grandson,
Bentley Mockler and a brother, Robert Mockler. Mert had served
with the Air Force in the Korean War and had helped to start the
Middlebury Civil Defense after the Palm Sunday Tornadoes. He had
worked for the GTE Telephone Company, retiring after 32 years. He
was a member of Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren, American
Legion Post 210 and the Coachman RV Club.  He loved camping,
fishing, and bowling. Visitation will be from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:
00 pm Friday, March 20, at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 South
Main Street Middlebury. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on
Saturday March 21, also at the funeral home. Services will be
conducted by Pastor George Bates of Little Pine Church of the
Brethren and Pastor Roseanna McFadden of Creekside Church of
the Brethren. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Middlebury.
Memorials may be given to the American Kidney Foundation or
Elkhart Hospice House.
