November 17, 1916 -- February 22, 2014

Ruth Maxine Powell, 97 years, passed away peacefully with family at her side
on February 22, 2014, at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, California. Ms
Powell was born in Middlebury, on November 17, 1916 to Iva May (Artley) and
Harry O. Powell. She was a graduate of Middlebury High School and South
Bend Business College. Following graduation she was employed by Saint
Mary's College, South Bend. She then acted as the secretary for First Bank
and Trust, South Bend. She became secretary for Bureau heads at the Social
Security Board in Washington D.C. until being transferred and acting as
secretary to the Bureau Chief in Chicago, Il. She entered the WAVEs in 1943
and was discharged in 1946. During her tenure in the service she served as
secretary to the Comdr. of all flight training at the Naval Air Station, Ottumwa,
Iowa. Following her military service she was employed by the American
Legion Magazine in Chicago, IL. She then became secretary to the Vice
President and later the Treasurer of Oscar Mayer Co. Her final position was
with the US Gypsum Corporation as executive secretary to the CEO until her
retirement. After spending her working years in Chicago she retired to La
Jolla, CA. where she enjoyed traveling, golf, volunteering, and friends. She
was a member of the Presbyterian Church in La Jolla. She is survived by
nieces, Barbara Ballman, Dayton, OH, Donna Bronson (Burt), Toledo, OH,
Delores Dotlich (Danny), Coatesville, IN, Phyllis Wilcher, San Antonio, FL, and
nephews, Donald Powell, Medina, OH, and David Steele (Linda), Fort Wayne,
IN. She is also survived by many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Paul Powell, sister Helen
L. Powell Steele and nephew Darrell Steele. The family will hold private
