Joel Thomas Kooistra
                                       
                                        January 7, 1991 -- March 17, 2016

Joel Thomas Kooistra, 25, of Wabash, died at 2:02 pm on Thursday, March
17, at Parkview Wabash Hospital, Wabash, after a brief fight with pneumonia.
Joel was a resident of Vernon Manor Children's Care Center, Wabash. He
was born on January 7, 1991 in Kansas City, MO. He is survived by his
parents, Steven and Donna (Galbraith) Kooistra of LaGrange; five sisters,
Jennifer Kooistra of New Paris, Jodie (Samuel) Heatwole of Harrisonburg, VA,
Julie Kooistra of Wakarusa, Jamee Kooistra of LaGrange, Jayden Kooistra of
Columbia City; three brothers, Jesse (Anne) Kooistra of Shipshewana,
Joshua (Beth) Kooistra of Bloomfield, MO, Josiah Kooistra of LaGrange;
niece and nephew, Willow and Clay Kooistra; grandmother, Fonda Kooistra
of Inwood, IA; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in
death by his grandparents, Donald and Aura Galbraith and Rev. Richard
Kooistra. Joel had a traumatic brain injury at 16 days of age and lived his
short life physically and mentally handicapped as a result. Joel faced many
challenges in life bravely, endearing himself to and impacting the life of his
family and care givers in many ways. He was a blessing to all who knew him.
Visitation will be from 5:00- 8:00 pm on Sunday March 20 and Monday, March
21, at Hebron Fellowship Church, LaGrange. Funeral services will be at 10:00
am on Tuesday, March 22, at Townline Mennonite Church, Shipshewana.
Services will be conducted by Bishop Virgil Hershberger and Joel’s Father
Steven Kooistra. Burial will be in Townline Cemetery, Shipshewana.
