George F. Bates

George F. Bates, 70, of Middlebury passed away on Friday, August 1, at his
residence. He was born on August 20, 1943 in Constantine, MI, to Leonard P.
and Wanda (Smead) Bates. On February 8, 1964 in White Pigeon, MI. he
married Anna Derr, she survives. Surviving in addition to his wife, Anna
Bates, is a brother, Gordon Bates of Kaleva, MI. He was preceded in death
by his parents; an infant daughter; a son, Mark Bates and a brother, Gary
Bates. George was a 1961 graduate of White Pigeon High School; following
high school he attended Ferris State in Big Rapids, MI. and Western
Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI.  He served on the Middlebury Town
Council as the Police Commissioner and was on the Board of Directors at
Maplecrest Country Club, Goshen.  He also had been active in various
different business organizations. He had worked at Weyerhaeuser,
Middlebury Molding, Abitibi-Price and had started and ran his own business,
MWD, INC. in 1981 until retiring in 2007. He was a talented golfer, holding the
Club Championship at Oak Hills Golf Course, Maplecrest Country Club and
Meadow Valley Golf Club. George loved all his family and extended family
members, his golf buddies, friends and all of the experiences that life offers.
Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday, August 4, at Miller-Stewart
Funeral Home, 1003 South Main Street Middlebury. Private graveside
services will be held at Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury. Services will be
conducted by Pastor Ron Russell. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
may be given to the Boys and Girls Club of Middlebury or the First United
Methodist Church Building Fund.

Annie, We were sure saddened to hear of your loss. Our thoughts are sure
with you. Some years ago at coffee I told George I needed to hire a good
secretary and a few days later he told me you were interested. I often think of
those times. George just gave me a neat picture lately of him and Billy C.
