Gary D. Beachy of Middlebury peacefully passed away in the early evening
hours of Saturday, June 1, 2019, while surrounded by family. He was 68.
Born in Bemidji, Minnesota, to Joni and S. Alberta (Schrock) Beachy, Gary
developed a love for the great outdoors as a child. At the age of 6, his family
moved to the Goshen area, where he continued to forge his own path and
develop a determination to do things his own way.
He grew up surrounded by a large group of loving family and friends while he
maintained a sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around him.
After a brief stint living in Denver, Gary made his way back to Middlebury to
focus on working hard, raising his family and making a home he could be
Gary’s determined and deliberate nature meant that he excelled at cultivating
a backyard brimming with flowers and greenery, creating perfectly crisp paint
lines, finding the hidden fishing spots, tackling every type of home
remodeling project, appreciating a good afternoon nap and taking the long
way to enjoy the scenery.
He took extreme pride in everything he did and was constantly finding things
to add to his to-do list, but Gary’s early mornings were often reserved for
appreciating the sunrise with a hot cup of coffee in hand and good music
playing. Likewise, Sunday afternoons were reserved for phone calls with his
beloved kids Chad, Heather and Rachel, during which he doled out his own
special blend of encouragement, advice and admiration.
On the days that Gary’s longtime companion Lu could convince him to
ignore his carefully planned schedule, they could be found enjoying
breakfast and strolling through antique shops before putting the top down
on his convertible and cruising to Lake Michigan.
With every task he set out to accomplish, whether big or small, Gary never
stopped pushing himself to learn, grow and leave things better than he found

I was very sad to hear of Gary's passing. I worked with him for many years at Schult
Homes in Middlebury. I moved to Pennsylvania, and did not even realize he was ill. I
wish I would have known, as I was back there in March. Gary was a very hard worker
and a good man. I will miss his friendship. My sincere condolences to the entire family
and other friends.
