Esther Louise Mishler
Esther Louise Yoder Mishler, 83, formerly of Shipshewana, passed
away peacefully on Friday, November 7, at The Green House Village,
Goshen after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born on
November 30, 1935, in LaGrange, IN to John and Jennie Hostetler
Yoder. She lived and worked her whole life in the Shipshewana area.
Esther attended Goshen College in 1954 for one year receiving a
secretarial certificate after which she was employed by Wolfe Grain
Co. in Shipshewana. In 1956, Esther was married to Gerald Leroy
Mishler on October 6. Gerald and Esther were married for 31 years
and had four children. They worked together for many years in
farming. They were co-owners of Mishler Insurance Service. Esther
also was co-owner with her husband and son of the Buggy Wheel
Restaurant and Morton Street Bed and Breakfast, and the Bread Box
Bakery in Shipshewana for several years. She enjoyed and took
pride in working in her flower beds and making them look beautiful.
Esther loved hosting international students in her home with
Christmas International House and also hosted two MCC Trainees
from the Netherlands and Taiwan. Esther thrived as she served her
family well, made regular visits to the elderly from her community in
nursing homes, opened her home to singles and families who
needed a temporary place to live, and often reached out to those less
fortunate than herself. Many of her grandkids were babysat by her
and all of them have special memories of baking and decorating
Christmas cookies with Grandma.
Esther is survived by her four children and their spouses. Jerold
(Laura) Mishler, Joel (Kim) Mishler, Jennifer (Jere) Steiner, and Jane
(Dennis) Bontrager. She has 12 grandchildren: Andrea (Jon)
Sponsler, Gretchen (Carl) Parker, Emily (Alex) Gorsuch, Nicolas
Mishler, Zachary Mishler, Hannah Mishler, Caleb (Kelsey) Maloney-
Steiner, Tyler Steiner, Grace Steiner, Megan Bontrager, Molly
Bontrager, and Melinda Bontrager. Esther enjoyed visits with her 7
great grandchildren: Hollis, Rogan, and Hazel Sponsler, Levi and
Quinn Parker, and Willow and Edison Gorsuch. Rosalie Yoder, a
sister-in-law, also survives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald, on June 1, 1988,
her brothers, Robert and Orris, a sister, Sara Francis, a niece, Rachel
Yoder, sister-in-law, Doris Yoder and her parents, John and Jennie
Esther, a believer and follower of Jesus, was a member of Shore
Church most of her life. She was a faithful example to her family of
how to put God and others first, love everyone, and walk in
forgiveness. She taught Sunday School, vacation Bible School, and
served on many different committees. Esther found joy in singing
with her husband and close friends from Shore Church in an octet
and occasionally with her family.
Visitation with Esther’s family will be held from 2 - 7 pm on Tuesday,
November 13, at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury. Family
and friends may gather at Shore Cemetery, Shipshewana for a 10:00
am graveside service on Wednesday, November 14; following burial,
a celebration of her life will take place at 11:00 am at Shore Church
with Pastor Carl Horner officiating. A fellowship meal will follow and
all are welcome.
Memorial contributions in Esther’s memory can be given to the The
Green House Village of Goshen Music Fund for special events for
the elders or Shipshewana Ministerial Association, c/o of Shore

My sympathy to the family. I have fond memories of Esther
helping me make Christmas cookies. She was a dear friend and I
miss her. Each year we would meet for lunch, she was always busy
