MARIETTA, Ga. —Donald Schmidt, 85, formerly of Middlebury,
Ind., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 6, in Marietta. He was born Oct.
18, 1929, in Lansing, Ill. Don served his country honorably in the
United States Army during the Korean War. He married Gloria J.
Partner on March 5, 1951, and they were married 46 years before
she was tragically killed by a drunken driver Oct. 31, 1997. Don
moved to Florida, where he met his current wife of nine years,
Ardith Mumy-Schmidt, formerly of Grand Rapids, Mich.She
survives along with Don’s three loving children, Holly (Terry)
Minix of Granger, Ind.; Clif (Kim) Schmidt of Charleston, S.C., and
Kevin (Laurie) Schmidt of Middlebury. Don had four
grandchildren: Jeff (Kendra) Minix and Jamey (Darleen) Minix,
both of Elkhart, Ind., Andrew Schmidt of Grand Rapids and
Nichole (Rob) Schmidt-Hume of Antioch, Tenn. Don also had four
great-grandchildren: Jenner, Rayna, Jayden and Irelynn Minix, all
of Elkhart. Don will be laid to rest in the National Cemetery in
Bushnell, Fla., assisted by the Honor Guard of the American
Legion, of which he was a longtime member. Medford-Peden
Funeral Home in Marietta is handling arrangements. A memorial
service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday March 14, at First
United Methodist Church, Middlebury. Services will be conducted
by Pastor Ron Russell. Following the service, military honors and
a luncheon will be held at the American Legion, Middlebury. In
Lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made
to the family for a tree to be planted in a Middlebury park or to the
American Legion Post 210 Middlebury.
