March 1, 1922 -- September 14, 2020

Carol Grace Bickel, 98, of Middlebury, died at 8:07 am on Monday,
September 14 at Greencroft Health Care, Goshen. She was born on
March 1, 1922 on the farm in Middlebury to Fremont E. and Ruth
(Calvin) Smith. She is survived by a cousin Gerald Long and good
friends, Orla L. and Betty Miller and Franklin and Willie Berkey.
Carol’s mother died when she was born, so her maternal
grandparents, Grace and Frank Calvin, raised her with the help of her
father. Carol attended York Township schools and Bristol High
School graduating in 1940. She went on to attend the secretary
program at Goshen College for one year. She married Richard Allen
Bickel on June 27, 1941. He was killed in action in France during
World War II in 1944. Carol was a secretary for many years at Home
Comfort Coach, Vistula; Stewart Coach, Bristol; and Coachman
Industries, Middlebury. She was part of the American Legion posts in
Bristol and Middlebury. She was a lifelong member of Vistula
Christian Church where she played the piano and taught Sunday
School. Visitation will be from noon- 1:00 pm followed by a 1:00 pm
Celebration of Life service on Thursday, September 17 at Miller-
Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 South Main Street, Middlebury. Services
will be conducted Rev. Dr. Doug Cripe of Central Christian Church,
Elkhart. Burial will be in Vistula Cemetery, Bristol.
